One of Lviv’s major international achievements was securing third place in the European Capital of Innovation Awards 2023 (iCapital), an annual European Commission award that recognizes cities driving innovation, fostering cross-sector collaboration, and actively engaging residents in decision-making.
The Lviv Bureau of European Integration prepared the city’s application and coordinated its participation in the competition. Through this joint effort, Lviv was able to showcase its experience in advancing innovation, building strong partnerships, and responding to the challenges of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
As a result, Lviv was awarded €100,000 to support the implementation of city projects.
Lviv won the New European Bauhaus Prize 2024, an annual European Commission competition that recognizes innovative and sustainable solutions in architecture, design, and urban development that improve the quality of life for communities and society.
The winning application was jointly prepared by the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Lviv City Council and the Lviv Eurointegration Office. The awarded project, "Nad Dzherelom", is a recreational space located next to the UNBROKEN Mothers Сomplex. It was designed to promote the social integration of internally displaced people (IDPs) and support psychological recovery through access to nature.
As a result of the award, Lviv received €30,000 to further develop and scale up urban projects.
The Forum European Integration for communities in Ukraine served as a platform for sharing experience, building partnerships, and discussing the practical aspects of European integration at the local level. The event brought together more than 100 participants from communities across Ukraine, as well as delegations from the city councils of Mechelen, Vilnius, Kraków, Lublin, and Rzeszów.
Participants learned more about cooperation with European Union institutions, opportunities to participate in international programmes, and the development of partnerships between Ukrainian and European cities. Particular attention was given to strengthening the capacity of local communities through training, knowledge exchange, and the implementation of successful European practices.
The Forum provided a space for dialogue, the exploration of new opportunities for cooperation, and the strengthening of ties between Ukrainian communities and their European partners.
